The day I decided not to let my mind boss me around

Recently I was scheduled to have an oral surgery procedure done. A few days before it was scheduled, I found myself worrying about it a bit and realized that I was starting to stress myself out. Do you ever do that? The mind is a powerful tool that is for sure. One worrisome thought can lead to pure catastrophe. Since I became aware of what I was doing, I decided to take action! I am happy to report that it was a wonderful experience.

First I acknowledged that I had nothing to worry about. My decision on my dentist’s advice to have this procedure done was still the right one. Then at my next yoga class, during the intention setting portion of the class, I set my intention that I would not worry about this procedure. I further said a prayer asking for the procedure to go well. You know that old expression “worrying is like praying for what you don’t want”. During my daily meditation for the next few days I included this as a manta: “ I have nothing to worry about. My prayer has been answered and it will all be fine. “

I had initially told the doctor I was a little nervous, so his office gave me a prescription for a mild sleeping pill. In addition to taking the pill at bed time, I was told to take one when I got up in the morning. By the time my sister came to pick me up for the appointment, I was so relaxed! I also wore my favorite mala beads and inhaled lavender essential oil as I left the house. My phone was outfitted with new ear buds and I plugged into to Il Divo on Pandora loud enough to drown out any unpleasant sounds as soon as I sat in the chair.

Don’t let your mind rule your universe. You have all the power! You can take charge of your mental health by trying some of these ideas. Intention setting, praying, meditation, mantras, essential oils are all very powerful tools you can use every day.
